Noord (North) Holland
North Holland, Noord Holland, is the northwest province situated in between the Noord Sea, Wadden Sea, IJlessmeer, and Marketmeer. As of 2015 it had a population of 2, 762, 163 and 1,030 miles of beautiful country side. More than half of North Holland is below sea level and is reclaimed polder land. From the 9th to 16th century this area was County of Holland however in 1850, Holland was split into two provinces. The capital of the northern province is Haarlem and Amsterdam is the capital city of Holland. The province includes 51 provinces and 3 major waterways. This region is promarily Dutch however there are some folks who are ethnically Frisan and are descendants of Northern Europe.
From 1795 until 1813, the French had occupancy of North Holland.Because of this, many of the Dutch ways were pushed aside to make way for the Batavian Republic. Many borders were changed and a new government was established. However in 1807, North Holland was reestablished by the Dutch. The Dutch went on to defeat the French in 1813 and were able to rewrite their constitution the following year.

Den Helder
Den Helder is the northernmost point in the North Holland Province. There are two islands, Texel and Wadden, to the north. Before 1928, Den Helder was simply called Helder. Helder has many interpretations, often known said to be “hilly grounds” or “hell’s gates.” There is also a naval base situated on Den Helder because of its location on the province. Because Den Helder is situated on the Noord Sea, it has a maritime climate and is known as the sunniest city in the Netherlands.

Alkmaar
Alkmaar is a beautiful city known for its cheese market. It became a city in 1254. The oldest part of the city is a sandbank that protected its residents from medieval invaders. Alkmaar has seen quite a few foreign occupants in its tenure.In 1573, the Spanish took hold of the city. Dutch citizens urged their prince to help them and his response was to open the floodgates and allow flooding in the area to get rid of the intruders. When he did do so it helped end the Eighty Years War. That day, October 8, is still a holiday in Alkmaar in which people celebrate their victory. For a short time in 1799, Anglo-Russian seized the city but it was reclaimed later that year.
The North Holland Canal opened in 1824 and was dug through Alkmaar. Between 1865 and 1867 railways were built from Alkmaar to Den Helder and Alkmaar to Haarlem. Present day population is 107,822.

Amsterdam
Amsterdam is the capital city of Holland and has the highest population in the whole country. The city’s population is 851,373 and the metropolitan area has 1,351,587. This means that Amsterdam metro houses the majority of the population in North Holland. The name Amsterdam comes from the dam that was build around the Amstel River. What stared out as a small fishing village became the most important port during the Dutch Golden Age of the 17th century. In 2012, Amsterdam was ranked the second best city to live in Europe and 12th city internationally due its environment and financial opportunities.
Amsterdam is home to the Van Gogh Museum, Anne Frank House and the Amsterdam Stock Exchange, the oldest stock exchange in the world. Amsterdam is 6 feet below sea level . It is surrounded by polders and a man-made forest. It has 60 miles of canals. Amsterdam is divided in 90 islands and 1,200 bridges connect it. Amsterdam is also known as the world’s most multicultural city with more than 177 nationalities represented.

Den Haag
Den Haag is technically in the province of South Holland but I wanted to mention it since we visited there. It has 502, 704 residents and 1 million in the metropolitan area. It is the home to the cabinet seat, Supreme Court, Council of State ,States General and the United Nations. It originated in 1230 and also had Spanish occupants during the Eighty Years War. During World War II the city suffered substantial damage and many Jewish residents were killed.
Den Haag is the largest city on the Noord Sea. Rotterdam and Den Haag make up a megalopolis area and are comprised of 11 cities. Den Haag is divided into 8 neighborhoods where one can find the very rich and the very poor of Holland. Haagenees is a term for people who grew up in Den Haag. It is 48% Dutch, 15.1 % western immigrants and 34.4% non-western immigrants.

Haarlem
Haarlem became a city in 1245. It is situated on the northern edge of Ronstad, one of the most populated areas in Europe. The population is 155,758 and is a 15 minute train ride from Amsterdam. It is on the Sparnne River and has some coastal dunes. It has also been the center for tulips for centuries. Haarlem is mainly Dutch however there are many of immigrants living in Haarlem.
