Personal Code of Ethics
My ultimate desire in life is to be fearless in the face of adversity, serve God, seek justice in all things and to love others well. I will make do this by setting this code of ethics for myself:
1. Harmony and Reconciliation with self, God and others. 2. Strong, healthy and loving relationships with family and friends. 3. Seek beauty and wholeness through expressing myself creatively and empowering others to do the same. 4. Tear down walls of injustice within my personal circles and within the world. 5. Live life to the fullest by adventuring often and knowing people on a deep level. To acheive these desires, I will focus on these instrumental values: 1. Family Security 2. Loving 3. Forgiving 4. Equality 5. A World of Beauty 6. Inner Harmony 7. True Friendship 8. An Exciting Life |
The cultural values that influence me the most are:

My code of ethics for relating with people, regardless of age, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, ability or religion is:
1. I will step out of my comfort zone with expectancy of what God and others will teach me.
2. I will seek joy instead of conflict.
3. I will laugh and cry with others as life continues on.
4. I will fight against injustice with every breath I take.
5. I will stand beside my family and friends in seasons of hardship and goodness.
6. I will go after a life rich in community, adventure, hope and love.
7. I will be in spaces and create spaces for people to step into the fullness God created them to be.

Case Study
You are working with a youth-activism centered organiaztion as a lead teacher for three years. On a weekly basis the 20 youth who are under your supervision come together to vision for activism work that needs to be saught out in their community. Sanchez, age 16, has the idea to help the local community center plan a basketball tournament that will have youth from the neighborhood face off against police officers in a friendly and safe yet competitive way. Everyone agrees that Sanchez has a great idea so you begin planning the event with the community center and recruit basketball players. The whole high school is buzzing about the tournament when the day arrrives. Rosette, age 15, comes to you and says that she has overheard several other kids who are not involved in planning the event and who you do not know very well are planning to committ acts of vandalism and crime since there will be less police on the street that night. She informs me that she was told she had to keep this secret because if it came out then they would plant a bomb in the gymnasiusm instead. She was afraid to tell you but equally afraid of what could happen because of their actions, what do you do?
This is a tough situation to be in and threatens to heighten fear because it is potentially a loose-loose situation. Based on my values of reconciliation, love and forgiveness I would use the justice approach in order to treat everyone involved with respect and equality. In the most cautious way, I would ask Rosette if she was comfortable sharing with me who the people were who are planning this. Whether she told me or not I would inform the principle and the community center of the concern and advise the community center to close it's doors that night. I would procede with caution on how to inform the youth and police officers who would be playing there tonight because I would not want the news to get out that the secret plan had been leaked or for kids to be disappointed that all their hard work planning the event was for nothing. Ulitmately, I would choose to let my students know in person that the tournament would be rescheduled for another time and attempt to find the youth planning crimes and see if there was a way to get them involved in community activism group or in the next basketball tournament so that they could be involved in positive activities and a healthy environment.
